The Thrill of Love

Wednesday 16 - Saturday 19 October
The Thrill of Love portrays the real-life story of Ruth Ellis, the final woman to be executed in Britain, offering a new perspective on the woman beyond the media coverage.
A divorcee with a young child to care for, Ruth works in the kind of nightclubs where there’s more than just a drink on offer. The girls work hard, play hard and dream of a movie-star life. Then she meets the wealthy, womanising David, a racing driver with whom she becomes obsessed. Fame comes - but not in the way she imagines.
Their relationship ultimately culminates in a tragic act of violence, leading to a horrifying murder that shocks the community. Despite the overwhelming evidence against her, she chooses to plead not guilty, a decision that puzzles many observers. Instead of presenting a defense to justify her actions, she remains silent, leaving everyone wondering about her motives and reasoning behind the crime. The lack of remorse displayed by her further complicates the situation, as it raises questions about her emotional state and moral compass.
As the trial progresses, speculations arise about who she might be trying to shield or protect by refusing to cooperate with the legal system. Some believe that she is safeguarding a loved one, while others suspect that there might be a more sinister motive at play. The enigmatic behavior exhibited by her only deepens the mystery surrounding the case, leaving both the authorities and the public perplexed about the true nature of her involvement in the tragic event.
The Thrill of Love was first staged at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle-under-Lyme, in 2013.
